Introduction to Our Safety Policy

For more specific areas of safety policy

please use the links in the left hand column.

The purpose of this policy is to protect all paid staff, volunteers and service users, and to fulfil legal obligations. The Health and Safety Act 1974 states that "It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure so far as it is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of all of their employees" and "to provide a safe system of work, a safe place of work and a safe working environment"

The term ‘mediator’ where used in this policy shall mean all people, whether paid staff or volunteers, who take part in delivering mediation on behalf of Bristol Mediation.

All paid staff and volunteers will be issued with a copy of this policy by the manager, when they begin work for Bristol Mediation. Service Users will be informed by the caseworker of the names of the mediators allocated to them ad that they should check their ID cards on arrival. All service users will be informed of the office contact details from the first contact so that they are able to report any H&S issue. They will also be sent a feedback form at the completion of a case, so that they have a further opportunity to relay any concerns to us. H&S concerns will be investigated by the manager.

Ethos

Bristol Mediation believes that all paid staff and volunteers should work in safety. Service Users should also access our service in total safety. Violence and aggression includes actual or attempted physical harm, threats towards any of the groups mentioned above or other behaviour which causes them to feel afraid for their physical safety. Bristol Mediation always regards violence, aggression and intimidation as unacceptable and is committed to the support and protection of paid staff, volunteers and service users. Bristol Mediation trusts the judgement of our paid staff and volunteers and will endeavour to minimise risk by careful planning of work and training.
