TRUSTEE

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Criteria:

• A commitment to the principles and objectives of Bristol Mediation

• An understanding and acceptance of the duties, legal responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship

• An understanding of conflict resolution processes and constructive approaches to the resolution of disputes

• Strategic vision

• An ability to think creatively

• Good independent judgement

• Willingness to speak and listen to others

• An ability to work effectively as a member of a team

TRUSTEES NEEDED

Bristol Mediation requires new Trustees to steer the organisation and help ensure we fulfil our legal and financial responsibilities. We particularly need people with skills in finance, fundraising, strategic planning or marketing and communications. An interest in the mediation process is essential.

Bristol Mediation is a registered charity and a non-profit making company. It is currently managed by a committee of seven, drawn from a variety of backgrounds. We would like to increase the number of trustees to around twelve.

At present neighbour mediation is the mainstay of our work. Though we have been working with the local Youth Offending Teams to provide a mediation service to young people, usually housed in their hostels. As soon as further funding is available we will be restarting this work.

We are also working to provide restorative justice in Bristol Prison. If funds could be found we would also like to restart our work in schools.

BRISTOL MEDIATION TRUSTEESHIP

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WHAT IT INVOLVES

Attendance at Board Meetings, usually held once a month, sometimes at Easton Business Centre and sometimes at the home of a Trustee. Meetings are on a weekday morning (10.00am to 12.00noon), though this may change if the Trustees feel there is a need. Trustees also need to read agenda papers etc.

Sometimes we have ‘all day’ (10.00 to 16.00) Saturday meetings to consider strategy or policy issues.

The Annual General Meeting is usually held in October or November and it is helpful if Trustees are in attendance.

Trustees are also encouraged to take an interest in aspects of the work of Bristol Mediation; maybe even training to be a Mediator.
